De La Salle University-Dasmariñas ruled both the men’s and women’s division in the Luzon Leg of the 15th Nestea Beach Volleyball Championship at the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) sands court.
The DLSU-D men’s team leaned on Joel Villanueva and Ran-Ran Abdilla’s combined seven aces and 12 spikes to beat University of Luzon-Dagupan, 21-12, 21-18, in the finals.
“I have in the team Ram-Ram Abdilla, who maybe is the tallest player today in the meet at 6’2. His partner is also 5’7, I think, they can put up a good fight in the finals. I am very confident we are very competitive now,” said DLSU-D men’s coach Fidel Rojales.
Giezelle Bembo and Jennifer Manzano made it a double celebration when they crushed University of Perpetual Help-Biñan 21-7, 21-17, in only 55 minutes, to secure the women’s crown.
“We are aiming to improve our fifth place finish in Boracay in 2010. We now have good players in the persons of 5’9 Jennifer Manzano and 5’4 Giezelle Bembo. What we would do now is practice hard in time for the Boracay tilt,” said DLSU-D women’s coach Darwin Campana.
Despite the loss, UL-Dagupan still advanced into the men’s national finals in Boracay along with Lucena City’s Calayan Educational Foundation University after beating University of Baguio, 21-14, 21-13, in the battle for third place.
The UL-Dagupan women’s squad also made it to the national finals in Boracay through a three-set victory (21-16, 16-21, 15-12) over host FAITH Bravehearts, in the battle for third place in the women’s category. The team would join DLSU-D and UPH-Biñan in the grand finals on April 19 to 21.
Only the top three squads in the men’s and women’s classes of the four-leg regional eliminations earned an all-expense-paid trip to the Boracay national finals.
