There is just no stopping to De La Salle University- Dasmariñas’ pursuit to promote sustainable practices in campus and share its best practices with the world – a fact that is affirmed by its rank in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking where it placed 78th out of 301 participating schools from 61 countries worldwide.
DLSU-D, through its Green DLSU-D drive, was one of only two Philippine universities to enter the GreenMetric ranking, which was an initiative developed in 2010 to promote awareness among university leaders and stakeholders on sustainability issues, especially in the face of challenges in society and economy that can be addressed with the sustainable use of resources.
The University posted a score of 5,857 in six categories -- 418 in setting and infrastructure; 1,510 for energy and climate change; 1,425 for waste management; 715 for water treatment; 1,225 for transportation and 565 for education.
DLSU-D ranked especially high in the categories of waste management due to its extensive solid waste management policies and practices and the presence of a material recovery facility within campus. Its ongoing water treatment measures through an in house facility near the old CEAT building also received high marks from the raters. Its drive to promote biking and walking to get to school also effectively reduced carbon emissions on campus.
In her letter to the University to bare the results of the analysis, Professor Riri Fitri Sari, chairperson of UI GreenMetric Ranking of World University: “We thank you very much for your participation on UI GreenMetric 2013, for your submission and also for your responses. We wish you all the best with your continuous effort in sustainability. We hope that 2014 will be a smooth year for all of us to implement our programs to provide the best academic environment for everyone to grow and to be more productive, as well as preserving the environment for the future generations.”
Prior to ranking in the UI GreenMetric, the University was also included in the International Association of Universities - Higher Education for Sustainable Development portal, taking its place among hundreds of green campuses in the world. The University’s sustainability practices, aside from making it a benchmark for academic institutions and organizations in the country, has also been honored as the national winner of the PLDT-SMART National Search for Most Sustainable and Eco-friendly School in the Philippines. It was also chosen as a grantee by the institutions of Green Philippines Islands of Sustainability (GPIOS) Program of the European Union, among its other accolades.
